postheadericon Horse riding trip packing list

Whether you are going on a horseback riding trip through your own country or travelling to a new destination, going for a day trip or an overnight stay, there are certain items that will always be on your packing list.

The most important thing is to make sure that you have the correct equestrian equipment that fits properly. An ill-fitting horse riding helmet or saddle can really ruin an otherwise perfect trip. Tour groups often provide saddles, but if you are an experienced rider you may want to take your own riding saddle along to ensure ultimate comfort.

Equestrian equipment:

  • Light-weight horse riding helmet
  • Jodhpurs / riding slacks
  • Riding boots and chaps
  • Riding gloves
  • Saddle

Other apparel:

  • A hat for when you stop and take breaks and take your riding helmet off
  • Socks
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses

  • Insect repellant
  • Wet wipes or hand sanitizer
  • Camera
  • Binoculars
  • A comfortable backpack to keep all of the above in – this should fit comfortably on your back without compromising your comfort in the saddle.

For overnight trips remember the following:

  • Pants – cargo pants and zip off pants work well for being around camp in all weather and are lightweight and easy to pack
  • Flip flops – good for the shower and to wear around camp
  • Swimsuit –always good if you find  a river or dam along the way and want to take  a dip
  • Sleepwear
  • Change of underwear
  • Torch or headlamp
  • Travel sized toiletries
  • Plug adaptors, phone chargers and electronics should your camp have electricity
  • Bird and game books  – if your horse riding trip is in a game reserve this will help you to identify the things you might see along the way
